Question: I think if these corporations were not so greedy, then we could have decent jobs and make some decent money. They own and run everything. How can we have this utopian workplace that you are talking about with them running everything?
~George (and yes, I can’t wait to get away from this damn job!)
Response: I would not call my advocacy for a shift in how we work and do business “utopian.” I would call it the only next logical step. I understand that it is difficult for many of us to hear that how we work and play is of our own creation. We want to blame others for the way that our lives unfold, whether those others are a spouse, parents, a boss, a co-worker, or a corporation.
What I advocate is that we first explore the relationship between what is unfolding in our lives, including what goes on in the workplace and our beliefs. This is what 16 Mondays is all about. It is a simple, straight forward guide to shifting our beliefs about how our everyday experiences are created. Thoughts and emotions create our life circumstances, and if we can begin to consider changing our beliefs, then without fail, we can begin to live a different experience.
People the world over think the same as you about corporations. And there are people all over the world who are writing a new story about not only what it means to work, but also what it means to live on this planet. Most, if not all, of these new stories do not have corporations has characters. What I and many of those people are doing is discovering the power that we have to change the trajectory of this planet. It doesn’t matter at this point who is responsible for the ecocide, for the increasing gap between rich and poor, for sicknesses and preventable diseases, for the poisoning of food and water, for the military and prison industrial complex, etc.
What matters is that we realize that the drastic changes that we need to make are not external. If corporations suddenly disappeared tomorrow, our problems would not be solved, because the same consciousness that allowed corporations to grow and weld such power exists within us. If we could know the power of consciousness to address all the discomfort we experience, we would not have to concern ourselves with corporations. In actuality, we would not have to concern ourselves about working, because work would be no more.
Thank you, George, for your question. You are appreciated.
