“The situation the Earth is in today has been created by unmindful production and unmindful consumption. We consume to forget our worries and our anxieties. Tranquilizing ourselves with over-consumption is not the way.” Thich Nhat Hahn

My good friend, editor, and photographer, Laurie Thompson shared this image with me. The nude woman carrying a buffalo evokes a myriad of metaphors about our relationship with the Earth. The idea of Divine stewardship implies a conscious intra-dependent “looking after” of all forms of consciousness that veil the Source of the spirit or energy that informs them. This looking after is what has been, for the most part, guaranteed in and by the beauty and complexity of the biosphere. The Indigenous, who we all were at one time or another, still carry this knowing of Grace’s complexity.  Unfortunately the violation and the tampering with that complexity, and with Grace, by those who have veered from the ways of the ancients, has submerged the Earth and its inhabitants in a morass of arrogance, greed and ignorance.

Ignorance because human beings, especially those to whom we have abdicated our power, operate in the dark ideological alleys of the separation. Greed directs their waking hours, lived in mercantile arrogance where the value of life is revealed in the buying and selling of it. It is a pitiable situation. The majority of us are paralyzed by frustration and apathy, in denial that elected officials are purchased by the Greed Industrial Complex, and that the belief in democracy has hypnotized and rendered us into unwitting participants in our own demise and that of all forms of consciousness that live on the Earth.

Radical environmentalist David Jensen says that the acceleration of aggressive violation and destruction of the planet cannot be remediated or reversed by individuals. He believes that the mindless war against the planet is a societal disease, human supremacy, and must be addressed by society. Some of us contend that human supremacy, however, is a manifestation of the separation, and the separation has plagued this planet for thousands, if not millions of years, long before the current environmental crisis.

If we are to appeal to elected officials and the governments that legitimize them to take immediate action to solve a problem that is the result of our distorted perceptions about who we are and our place in the Cosmic order, then we are futilely trying to solve an old narrative problem with the old narrative approach: identifying effects as cause. The transformation in the conditions of the planet will only come about as a result of a transformation in consciousness. It cannot be legislated nor can it be dictated. The transformation in consciousness must be initiated one at a time, by choice, by an irrevocable decision to return to the original divine consciousness from which we come.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton condemned the “radical environmentalists” behind Bernie Sanders’ campaign, indicating they should “get a life,” according to a transcript of her comments at a September 2015 meeting with a construction union.”
